What is vBulletin?
vBulletin is a commercial software product developed by Jelsoft Enterprises and executed in PHP with a MySQL database. Since its first release in 2000, vBulletin has become the dominant forum script and the most popular software engine for online communities, like user forums, news feeders and (more recently) bloggers. Users abbreviate vBulletin as "vB."
vBulletin arose from a need to accommodate a large number of simultaneous users on a given website - a limitation that affected the growth of online communities of all sorts. The software really took off after the release of vBulletin 2.0 in 2002 because of its stability in a market cursed by periodic system overloads and crashes. Subsequent versions have greatly enhanced versatility and functionality, culminating in the current version (as of July, 2008) 3.7.2 (Patch level 1).
Examples of features included in vB version 3 are spam management, thread tagging and searching, reciprocal user friendships, visitor messaging, picture galleries, extended profiles, social grouping, tools for forum moderators, and bookmarking.
