What is CakePHP?

CakePHP is a Web application framework that follows in the footsteps of Ruby on Rails, conceptually, but written in PHP rather than Ruby. It is open-source under an MIT License.

CakePHP is a community-supported project that began in 2005 when PHP programmers sought to combine the strengths of Ruby on Rails with some of the functionalities unique to PHP as a programming language. Version 1.1 is the current version with 1.2 under development. CakePHP, like Rails, uses the model-view-controller architectural design pattern and Active Records as the means of interfacing the data base in the Web application.

CakePHP has quickly achieved a large group of loyal users. In 2007 the Mambo Foundation adopted CakePHP for its widely-used Content Management System called Mambo.
